Lightning strike blamed for Columbus apartment fire

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus Fire investigators say a lightning strike caused a large apartment fire Sunday evening at the Stonegate Apartments on Wint Lane.

Eighteen people were displaced by the fire, which started in the building's attic and spread down to the second story apartments when portions of the roof collapsed onto the ceiling above the apartment units.

Firefighters were called to Stonegate at 5:45 p.m. Sunday and found smoke and flames showing. They called for a second and third alarm and brought in off-duty personnel before the fire was put out just before 8 p.m.

The 18 residents lived in twelve units of the building, and are receiving assistance from Salvation Army and American Red Cross, according to Columbus Fire.
