Voice referendum 2023: How the ACT voted in crucial Yes, No poll

The votes are in and the Australian Capital Territory has voted in favour of a Voice.

With two thirds of the vote counted as of late on Saturday, Yes is on 62 per cent.

It’s the only jurisdiction where Yes won, but like the Northern Territory, the ACT did not count towards the double majority.

To succeed, the referendum needed to achieve a double majority, meaning both the majority of Australians and the majority of states vote Yes.

There are six states in Australia so four states were needed for the vote to pass.

Less than 90 minutes after the first polls closed, the Voice to Parliament referendum was called as a massive defeat for Yes.

Even the strongest Yes state, Victoria, could not overcome the tidal wave of No votes.

But in the ACT, all three of the territory’s electoral divisions strongly supported the Voice — Fenner (57 per cent), Bean (59 per cent) and Canberra (72 per cent).

The seat of Canberra, held by Labor MP Alicia Payne, was the third strongest Yes vote in the country, behind Melbourne (78 per cent) and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Sydney seat of Grayndler (75 per cent).
